Dan Paul's General Assembly Blog

The pastor of The Christian Church of Pacific Grove, California takes a drive to Portland, Oregon for the General Assembly of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

Dude, Someone stole my stuff!!!

You know how to make God laugh, right? Tell her/him that you have plans.

Dude, someone stole my stuff yesterday morning! Woke up to get my tour of the California Indian Museum and quickly learned that someone had crow barred the passenger’s side window of my van and took off with everything except my golf clubs, some CD’s, the analog/digital converter I use for recording and my Bible.
Everything else is gone. Two handmade guitars, Marshall amp, laptop computer, recording microphone, not to mention all of my clothes and personals. Yes, it’s true. Someone made off with the clothes washed in the blood.

Huge inconvenience. But I’m in no pain and my van still runs and there is a General Assembly to attend. Spent the morning talking to police (in Sacramento, it takes over two weeks to file a report), and to insurance companies. The church secretary Emily is writing a description of my guitars and faxing them to all of the pawn shops and music stores in Sacramento.

After all of the resulting phone calls were made, I gave myself a little time to digest the day and strolled around some Japanese Maple trees located in a Botanical garden in Dunsmuir. Had to allow my brain to adjust to today’s paradigm shift. God is good. Jesus is calling me to Portland. And possessions can tighten your tethers to the world. I need to focus on the tingle of letting things go. Letting go can be more soul-energizing than accepting new things to add to your collection of stuff.

My pastor called. Ben Bohren is a phenomenon. You know how he knew to call me? He heard it on the wind. He saw it in the breaking waves. He has global connections - friendly eyes everywhere. Do you realize that if who we are as persons is largely based on the social web we have constructed - how immense Ben Bohren’s soul must be?

He called to comfort, and he did.

Tina Heck called as well. She is starting her own blog with the title: moon women. As soon as I have internet connection, I’ll have to check it out.

Right now, I’m holed up in the Running Y Ranch near Klamath Falls. I had to charge a new PC from Circuit City so I can keep this blog up and because I guess I need a new PC. Praise be to the Creator that this theft didn’t happen to me when I was in my 20’s. Let’s just say that I have not always been the robust big dog soul that now writes to you. Back when certain parts of my anatomy were more important to me than the Spirit -- well, read what Paul says about it. If this had happened to me when I was in my 20’s, I’d be randomly chewing on metal and punching things that make lots of noise when you break them.

Long, long sleep at the Running Y. Coffee and leftover corn on the cob. There is an eagle screaming on top of a cedar tree in direct height proportions as my balcony. The golfers below aren’t cussing very loudly. God is good. Christ is calling me to Portland. And spirit abounds.

Dan, thanks for the great blog! And for the insight on 'letting go' of stuff - painful to do - the shock of finding your guitars missing is one I dread. I'm a guitarist too and I don't want to think of how I'd feel if mine were stolen. But if it does happen - I do believe I'll remember your words and they'll help. Thanks.

Another note on your blog from today - I'm a member at DCC Bartlesville, the home church of our new GMP (yeah, we're awfully proud!) and a good friend of Bethany's. If you can get her to sing with you, you'll be amazed - she's got a great voice - in fact, she (and Sharon, for that matter) sang backup vocals on one of my CDs!

I also enjoyed your comments about the Children's moment on the kingdom of God - that's just what I preached on sunday and I'm afraid I used metaphors of re-imagining our world rather than a place after death. What a bazaar idea! Anyway, thanks so much for sharing!

I just came across a great gardening website called AtlGardening.com*. Not only does it feature articles for the gardening enthusiast, but has become a great garden accessory
resource for me in my landscaping effort. The webmaster of this site has recently added a book section that seemed to expand everytime I go there.
What I like about it is that I get instant access to the book and don't have to wait for the book(s) to arrive which of course saves me money.....no shipping charges.... in some cases. Great idea. I love it. You must check it out today. Let me know what you think.

Sad to say I just got back from a bowling tournament and decided to log in and do some websurfing. I love your blog. It had some very good laughs. I am doing a paper on golf equipment and have been downloading information for the last hour. I dont know how I came across your blog but I am glad I did. It has set me back a little because I have spent the last hour reading your archives. If you dont mind I would like to add you to my favorites so I can back again and read some more. Well I need to get back to golf equipment. I am almost finished with it. Great job.

p.s some very good points on your blog

I feel lessened for not having anything commerical to say regarding golf equipment or Fender guitars, so I'll just allow that I was touched to read your post. I found your blog after a strange impulse led me to Google for "Carl Skrade," and that led me rather whimsically to you.

You sound like a good and true child of Carl -- I am warmed to see that his seed still trickles out across the world, like a mountain stream adding its note of insistently indulgent purity even as it mingles with the mudbrown waters of the mighty Mississippi. Would such a forelorn drop of unsullied refreshment make a difference when at last swirled through the cesspools of stormwracked New Orleans? Who can say -- but it gives cause for hope and wonder, and betimes that be enough.

I really must say this is the best blog I have ever come across in a very long time. I am not just saying that either! I am studying for my associates degrees and spent the last 5 hours (and 12 cups of java) researching this area topic. Many blogs have very generic information but yours is very different. I can actually apply some of this information to my associate studies. No worries I will give you full credit in my references section.(I will even give you a link in my blog!) I took it upon myself to add you to my favorites and will visit back to let you know how my grade ends up. Thanks so much from!golf equipment closeouts.
